Publisher’s Note
‘Islam in Bangladesh’ is the famous book of Dr. U. A. B. Razia Akter Banu which was first published by EJ Brill, Leiden, the Netherlands in 1992. It was the revised version of her doctoral dissertation at the University of London, UK. At the time, Bangladesh was the second largest Muslim country in the world. Though 86.6 percent of the populations were Muslim, Islam, as a socio-political entity, had not drawn much academic attention. Through a historical overview and extensive field research, the author tried to provide a sociological interpretation of the origin, spread and evolution of Islam in Bangladesh.
Dr. Banu was a professor of Political Science at Dhaka University. She has written a good number of books and articles on Islamic themes which were published in different national and international journals. She passed away on 1 December 2011. May the soul of Professor Dr. U. A. B. Razia Akter Banu rest in peace in paradise.
It is with great pleasure BIIT is re-printing this classic book. We are thankful to all concerned for having the opportunity to do so. We believe that this book will immensely benefit teachers, students and researchers of colleges and universities, as well as institutions at home and abroad.
We also thankful to all connected with this publication. Above all we are grateful to Allah (SWT) for giving us strength to make a small contribution to the cause of Islam.
